It is clear that edit conflicts are nerve-racking and rather time consuming. One may opt to adopt harmless edit habits such that one renders the edits less frequently. In doing this, one aims at making more edits to pages that have not been edited recently, for example those listed on ancient pages.

Another way avoiding edit conflicts is to develop the habit of making single more extensive changes to articles, rather than frequent minor edits. In doing this, chances are that you are likely to get an edit conflict but on the other hand, you are less likely to be the source of edit conflicts to other users. The use of the "Show preview" button is also of great use in preventing possible blunders.

Wikipedia has an "In Use" notice in its Templatenamespace users may activate if they have the intention of editing a page over a long period of time. This serves the purpose of preventing edit conflicts. Equally, you can put an {{inuse}} template on an article then proceed to make the major edit. Remember to remove this template once you finish editing.
