Typically, a query might be formulated as follows:
- Show all cities in Germany with a population greater than 500,000; display the name of each city, its population, and its surface area.
- By formulating a query, you can ask that the system generates a table, which can be displayed in various ways.
- Each row in the table shows information about one instance i.e., city, object, person, etc, that is described on a page of its own:
- The name of the instance i.e.- the title of the page that describes it, e.g. "Berlin".
- The values of some 'properties of the instance (one property per column; e.g., population, surface area).
- The building blocks of a query are restrictions.
- You can also make the following specifications in a query
- Determine the properties that are to be displayed in the columns
- Determine how the table is to be formatted-e.g. how the rows are to be sorted
