Patrolled edits is a feature which allows specific users to mark items in recent changes as having been patrolled or approved. This is usually only available if you have sysop permissions by default.
Customization:
All the MediaWiki versions 1.6 through 1.8 have user preference page that is available to users who have permission to mark edits as patrolled. If set, the edits made by these users are automatically marked as partolled.
In MediaWiki 1.9, this user preference has been removed and replaced by a new autopatrol right, which is only assigned to sysops by default. In addition to this users cannot mark their own edits as patrolled.
